Organic and conventional cotton: the real differences

The most-quoted figure on water savings was withdrawn by the very organisation that circulated it. Here's what really separates the two cottons.

Organic cotton has spent years earning a reputation as the automatically right choice, often resting on a single figure: water savings. It's a number that's circulated for over a decade, quoted everywhere as the final word — so widely repeated that the organisation that first put it out had to withdraw it. Worth starting over from what actually changes between an organic cotton field and a conventional one, separating verifiable data from slogans.

What an organic field actually rules out

A recognised organic cotton certification — GOTS among others — sets precise rules, not vague intentions: no synthetic pesticides, no chemical fertilisers, no genetically modified seed, and on-site inspections by an independent third party. It's a traceable definition: what goes into and out of the field is verified, not simply declared. Conventional cotton, which covers the vast majority of world production, carries no such constraint — it can use synthetic crop treatments and varieties bred, including genetically, for higher yield. That's the difference you can actually check — not an opinion.

The most-quoted number — and it was withdrawn

For years the industry's most repeated figure was this: organic cotton uses 91% less water than conventional cotton. The original source was a 2014 Textile Exchange report, picked up by countless brands and articles. In 2021 the Transformers Foundation report Cotton: A Case Study in Misinformation challenged that number, and Textile Exchange itself removed the claim from its site, admitting the comparison was flawed at its root: it set mostly rain-fed organic fields against artificially irrigated conventional ones — a comparison, the report notes, that was never properly peer-reviewed. The conclusion, now shared by the very organisation that put the figure out, is that a cotton field's water use depends mainly on climate and irrigation method — not on the organic or conventional label.

Yield, price, who pays the difference

On yield and price, the public data available is less clear-cut than either side tends to claim, and varies a lot by region, climate and how far along a farm is in converting to organic. What can be said without inventing figures is that the shift from conventional to organic almost always means years of adjustment, while the soil regains fertility without the chemical inputs it was used to, before yields stabilise again. On top of that come certification costs and annual on-site inspections, which conventional cotton doesn't carry. A higher price for a certified-cotton garment isn't purely margin, then — part of it is the cost of a real verification system.

What actually decides the impact

If water use depends more on climate than on the label, the practical consequence is that "organic" alone doesn't say how much a garment weighed on the environment. What matters is where that cotton was grown, under what irrigation system, and how short and traceable the chain is between field and finished garment. It's a less comfortable message than a slogan, but it's the true one — and it shifts the focus from a single label to the whole supply chain.

It's the logic we try to hold onto ourselves: distrust labels that promise everything, and ask instead where a fabric comes from, who worked it, through how many steps — inside the manufacturing arm of our own group, since 1979. An organic label remains a good starting point, not a finish line.
