Fashion's September: fairs, runways, craft

Vogue World opens Milan on the hand versus the machine, Paris and Rho reopen the shows that decide next winter's materials, Italian craftsmanship keeps touring. Four appointments, read before they start.

September doesn't bring sales yet, or half-year results: it brings the calendar. Milan, Paris, Rho — over the coming weeks the industry decides what will actually reach boutiques a year from now, and with which materials. Before the brands, the people who cut, weave and design the trend before it becomes a garment take centre stage again.

Vogue World opens Milan on the hand, not the algorithm

On September 22, the first day of Milan Fashion Week womenswear, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II hosts Vogue World: Milano, a spectacle built around the theme "The Human Touch in the Age of Technology." A series of acts keeps hand and machine in constant dialogue, from Renaissance brocade weaving to contemporary fabrics and artificial intelligence.

The creative team includes Juan Costa Paz as creative director, Lady Amanda Harlech for fashion, Judith Clark as curator and Marco Balich as executive producer. Italian fashion houses and master artisans take part, with a live stream on vogue.com: the fashion week opens by stating, before a single show, what it intends to defend.

Paris brings back fabrics that can actually be compared

From September 1 to 3, Paris Nord Villepinte hosts the autumn edition of Première Vision Paris: 20,000 professionals are expected from 130 nationalities, with sourcing dedicated to the autumn/winter 2027-28 season.

The Fibers & Materials Matrix debuts, a tool developed with Paris Good Fashion that compares 60 materials across 12 families using shared evaluation criteria. A concrete attempt to make the sustainability credentials of the fabrics on show readable — and comparable — instead of leaving them to a generic label.

Lineapelle tells the story of seduction in the age of algorithms

From September 15 to 17, Fieramilano Rho hosts Lineapelle: over 1,000 exhibitors confirmed, running alongside Simac Tanning Tech and Filo. The fair's Fashion Committee presents its trend project for autumn/winter 2027-28: "Prompt – Seductive Algorithms: The Illusion of Sweetness."

It isn't a trend forecast in the classic sense, but a research path that reads the present through material: the pursuit of small "sensory rewards" in everyday life, the tension between algorithmic perfection and material authenticity. Colours, textures and surfaces are presented in detail during the fair — material, once again, as the place where the season is decided before the runway.

The craftsmanship Grand Tour stops in Sanremo and Rome

Confartigianato Imprese, together with ICE Agency, Italy's Foreign Ministry, LVMH, CNMI and Fondazione Bulgari, continues "Eccellenza, la moda artigiana": a touring calendar telling the story of the know-how behind roughly 80,000 Italian fashion businesses, of which 40,000 are artisan workshops, employing 460,000 people in total.

After stops in Cosenza, Milan, Palermo, Matera and Ascoli Piceno, the tour continues in Sanremo from September 5 to 13 and in Rome on September 14, ahead of international stops in Hong Kong, Tirana, Dubai, London, New Delhi and Tbilisi. A simple reminder: know-how, to stay prestigious, needs telling as much as making.

In brief

Milan opens fashion week by declaring the hand before the machine. Paris tries to make material sustainability comparable. Rho reads the coming season through leather and surfaces. And Italian craftsmanship keeps its world tour going, one stop at a time. Four different fairs, the same raw material: the craft that can't be automated.
