Broad shoulders, multiplied checks, real buttons

Three signals for autumn-winter 2027/28: where the volume sits, what the season prints, what closes a garment.

Autumn-winter 2027/28 comes down to three things: a shoulder, a print, a button. The formula is always the same: a calm base and one decisive gesture. Our sources are FashionUnited’s trend reports.

Volume moves up to the shoulders

According to FashionUnited’s trend report for the season, volume changes place: broad, 1980s-style shoulders and chest over tapered trousers or skirts. The waist stays defined.

It is the opposite of head-to-toe oversize. The shape is built on contrast: wide on top, narrow below. The same source calls the mood “controlled audacity”.

Around the shoulder, everything is layered: turtleneck, shirt, waistcoat, jacket. The key pieces are the blazer, the skirt suit and the reversible double-faced coat. Wool gets lighter and softer, so the volume never weighs.

Multiplied checks, redrawn camouflage

On prints, again per FashionUnited, checks multiply and distort: as many as four different checks in a single garment. Camouflage returns recoloured, enlarged or digital.

Another FashionUnited piece explains why it lasts. The muted camouflage tones, olive, khaki, brown, sand, work almost like neutrals and sit well with denim, leather, tailoring and florals. Set against something soft, ruffled satin or bows, they give feminine pieces a harder edge.

The same article recalls a remark from a conservator at the Cleveland Museum of Art: camouflage moves into civilian fashion in politically unsettled times.

The detail that closes a garment

The third signal is small. Among the season’s trims, FashionUnited lists horn, corozo and mother-of-pearl buttons, bio-based ones, oxidised metal and recycled-leather labels. Even scarves carry buttons.

The styling principle is stated plainly: one bold accent on a calm base. And quiet luxury with a hidden twist, in the linings or the piping.

Deliberate imperfection returns too: the trace of the hand, the piece that is not identical to the next. A real button is the first thing you touch and the last thing you forget.
